Content Management Systems

A content management system should be the basis for every Web site built. It allows the end user - the owner of the site - to make changes anytime they want to, without calling the Web designer. The days of paying a specialist just to change some words on a Web site are gone. With a content management system, CMS for short, anyone can change text, add a photo or create new pages in just minutes, using any Web browser anywhere in the world. There are hundreds of open source CMS scripts available for free. Some are better than others. I recommend one based on PHP because hosting for PHP is everywhere. Leave the ASP.NET, ColdFusion or Perl scripts for the techies. Some top PHP CMS scripts include Drupal, Wordpress, LightNEasy, Flatpress, MuCMS, CMS Made Simple, Etomite, Joomla, e107 and ModX.

Best of the best

There are lots of good open source content management systems. But some stand out as the best. My criteria include reliability, speed, easy installation, logical administration and templating. My top recommendation is WordPress; it is solid, extendable, easy to use, and many great templates are available. It originated as a blog script, but a couple of add-ons make it a great CMS. If you do not have access to MySQL or simply prefer a flat file system, I recommend Flatpress. It is reliable, fast and it is easy to create your own template. If you don't mind taking some time to learn, Drupal is probably the most extendable CMS available. It's a very good system that is almost infinitely expandable. If, on the other hand, you don't want to spend any time learning, think about one of the hosted blog services. I recommend Blogger/Blogspot because it works, there are tons of good free templates available, and lastly because you can make money with AdSense or other ad-serving systems. Most other free hosted services don't allow ads.
